Meet the Artist

Filomena Smoła

Filomena Smola is an artist from Gdańsk and one of the few women in Poland who independently blows and works with hot glass. She graduated from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, where she studied Ceramics and Glass, as well as Painting. She received a master’s scholarship to study in the United States at Kent State University, which hosts one of the country’s oldest glass programs and where she currently creates and teaches. Filomena has been awarded fellowships at UrbanGlass in New York, the Bocci Design and Manufacturing Company in Vancouver and Berlin, and The Chrysler Museum of Art. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Poland and internationally. She has been recognized by institutions such as the Glass Art Society in the United States, Glass Review 43 at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Zbigniew Horbowy Award, the Stanislav Libenský Award at the Prague Gallery of Czech Glass, the International Biennale of Glass in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the EVOLUTION exhibition by the Glass Art Society in Berlin.
